Kathmandu — Nepal imported electric cars, jeeps, and vans worth Rs. 6.25 billion in the first three months of the current fiscal year, according to the Department of Customs. During the same period last fiscal year, the import value was Rs. 6.10 billion.
The data shows that 104 more electric vehicles were imported this year compared to the same period last year. A total of 2,620 electric vehicles were brought into the country in the first quarter of this fiscal year, up from 2,516 units last year.
According to the department, imports of vehicles with a capacity of up to 50 kilowatts decreased slightly, from 772 units worth Rs. 1.39 billion last year to 751 units worth Rs. 1.26 billion this year.
Similarly, imports of vehicles up to 100 kilowatts capacity also saw a small drop, from 1,582 units worth Rs. 4.16 billion last year to 1,545 units worth Rs. 4.02 billion this year.
However, imports of vehicles up to 200 kilowatts capacity increased significantly, from 159 units worth Rs. 530 million last year to 323 units worth Rs. 950 million this year.
Meanwhile, imports of higher-powered vehicles (up to 300 kilowatts) have decreased. Last fiscal year, Nepal imported three units worth Rs. 18.4 million, while this year, only one unit worth Rs. 4.8 million was brought in during the same period.
