Kathmandu, Oct 7: The meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is being held today. The meeting has been called by Prime Minister Sushila Karki and is scheduled to take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Prime Minister’s Office.
According to Dinesh Prasad Bhatt, Executive Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the meeting will mainly discuss the disasters caused by recent floods and landslides across the country.
The meeting has prepared nine agendas, including providing relief to affected families and reopening blocked roads. Discussions and decisions are expected on key points such as expressing condolences over the loss of lives and properties, resuming essential services, distributing relief materials, providing compensation to the families of the deceased and missing persons as per law, controlling possible disease outbreaks after the disaster, and setting up temporary shelters.
Heavy rainfall from October 3 to 5 triggered floods and landslides that claimed at least 60 lives. Ilam district recorded the highest number of casualties. The disaster has also caused damage worth millions to roads, bridges, hydropower projects, and other infrastructure.
The meeting will be attended by the Finance Minister, Energy Minister, Home Minister, Industry Minister, Education Minister, Agriculture Minister, and Communication Minister, along with the Chief Ministers of all seven provinces.
Former Minister Dr. Gangalal Tuladhar, Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Chief Secretary, Chief of the Army Staff, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs will also participate as expert members.
