October 5, Kathmandu — Two people have died and at least ten others are missing after being buried by a landslide in Ilam, according to local reports. However, police have not yet officially confirmed the exact number.
According to Ilam Police, initial reports show that houses have been buried in areas such as Manebhanjyang, Deumai, and Ilam Municipality. The District Police Office said that rescue and data collection have been difficult because of the challenging terrain.
In Ilam Municipality Ward No. 6, Ghos, two children from the same family died after their house, belonging to Dambar Bahadur Pakhrin, was buried by a landslide. Three other family members are missing. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, and two injured people are being prepared to be taken to the hospital, said local youth Rewaz Tamang.
Similarly, in Maijogmai Rural Municipality–6, five members of Barmalal Sogmi’s family are missing due to a landslide. In Sandakpur Rural Municipality–3, Sulubung, two members of Kumar Sedhai’s family are missing. Police also reported that five people are missing in Maangsebung because of landslides.
Chief District Officer of Ilam, Sunita Nepal, said that floods and landslides have caused significant damage in the district, but the exact number of casualties and losses has not yet been confirmed. She added that as the rain has stopped, search and rescue operations have been continuing since early morning.
