Kathmandu – With the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the head of the interim government, the country has, for the first time, come under female leadership.
Following an agreement reached at the President’s Office on Friday evening, Karki is set to take her oath of office shortly today, becoming the first woman to lead the nation.
Karki had previously made history as the first female Chief Justice of Nepal. Nearly eight years after her retirement from the judiciary, she now sets another milestone as the first woman to head the executive branch.
During her tenure in the judiciary, she was widely recognized for her assertive and honest character.
This appointment comes after the widespread protests by the Gen Z movement against the social media shutdown, which led to the collapse of all three branches of the government and forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
Following the resignation, President Ram Chandra Poudel, with the involvement of the Chief of Army Staff and other officials, initiated the process of forming a new government.
Karki will now lead the country through the aftermath of the protests and the damaged structures, and will hand over power to the newly elected representatives after the upcoming elections.
